Lesson 6 - Alongside Docking
Docking alongside a quay or another vessel is an essential skill for any skipper. With the right preparation, good communication, and slow, controlled movements, it can be straightforward and stress-free. ⚓
1. Planning the Approach
-
Assess wind and current 🌬️, as both will affect your handling.
-
Choose your docking side: port or starboard. Decide if you’ll approach bow-in or stern-in.
-
Plan your departure before arrival – knowing how you’ll leave is just as important as getting in.
-
Always have an escape plan in case you need to abort the maneuver 🚨.
2. Preparing the Yacht
-
Turn off music 🎶 and eliminate distractions so the crew can focus.
-
Position fenders at the correct height and along the docking side 🛟.
-
Brief your crew 👥 on roles and responsibilities.
-
If other yachts are nearby, communicate your intentions 📣.
3. Executing the Approach
-
Approach as slowly as possible while still maintaining control 🐢.
-
Use prop walk to your advantage. For example, on a bow-in, port-side approach, reverse gear can help swing the stern in thanks to prop walk. 🔄
-
Angle in gently—get the bow close first, then use small throttle bursts to adjust the stern. ⚙️
4. Securing the Yacht
-
Tie off bow and stern lines first to stabilize the yacht.
-
Add spring lines (forward and aft) to prevent surging 🪢.
-
Ensure fenders are in place:
-
Against a quay: all fenders on one side
-
Alongside another yacht: fenders on both sides (four or more recommended)
-
-
Double-check cleats and knots to avoid mid-mooring surprises 🧷.
5. Rafting Alongside Multiple Yachts
-
Every second yacht should tie to boats ahead and behind.
-
Every third yacht should also tie bow and stern lines to shore 🪨.
-
Alternate bow directions to reduce raft movement.
-
Place larger yachts closer to the quay and smaller ones on the outside.
-
Think of it like a spiderweb—every connection adds stability 🕸️.
6. Departing the Dock (Bow-Spring Method)
-
Place a ball fender at the contact point with the dock ⚪.
-
Assign a crew member with a running fender, just in case.
-
Tie a spring line from the bow cleat to the dock.
-
Apply forward throttle gently against the spring line to push the stern outward 🔁.
-
Drop all other lines, then shift to neutral, reverse out, and release the spring line last.
Alternative: Stern-Spring Departure
-
Tie a stern spring line to hold the yacht in place.
-
Use reverse throttle to swing the bow out into open water.
-
Once clear, release all lines and exit under control 🧭.
Final Tips
-
Move slowly and deliberately to stay in control.
-
Use prop walk as a tool, not a problem.
-
Communicate clearly with your crew at all times 🗣️.
-
Always have a departure plan.
-
Don’t skimp on fenders and lines—more is better for protection 💪.
